Finland 3, Germany 1

Finland kicked off their tournament on a high note by leaning on their signature structured play to stymie a resilient German squad. Germany put up an aggressive physical fight early on, but the Finns stayed disciplined. The decisive moment came late in the third period when Jesse Puljujärvi found the back of the net to break the deadlock. Switzerland 3, United States 1

The Swiss host crowd in Zurich was treated to an absolute masterpiece as Switzerland handled the defending champions, Team USA. The Swiss jumped out to a fast start in the opening frame, building a 2-0 cushion in the first period behind goals from Pius Suter and Sven Andrighetto (assisted by Janis Moser). Team USA, despite carrying elite NHL talent, struggled to break through Switzerland’s aggressive defensive structure early on. The Swiss capitalized on their momentum, adding defensive discipline and offensive depth down the stretch to pull off a statement 3-1 win to close out opening night.

Group B (Fribourg — BCF Arena)

Canada 5, Sweden 3

In what was easily the most entertaining and star-studded game of the afternoon window, Canada outlasted Sweden in a high-octane thriller. Canada looked to be in total control early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period courtesy of goals from veterans John Tavares and Ryan O’Reilly.

Sweden completely turned the tide in a wild second period, responding with three goals from Jacob Larsson, Lucas Raymond, and Mattias Ekholm to force a 3-3 tie heading into the final intermission (Dylan Holloway scored Canada’s lone second-period goal).

The game was decided at the 3:31 mark of the third period when Connor Brown took a crisp cross-ice feed from top prospect Porter Martone and beat Swedish netminder Magnus Hellberg. Dylan Cozens added an insurance marker later in the frame. Goaltender Jet Greaves earned the win with 25 saves, while Martone, Darnell Nurse, and Fraser Minten finished with two assists apiece.

Czechia 4, Denmark 1

Fresh off a strong previous World Championship cycle, Czechia looked dominant in their tournament debut against Denmark. The Czechs suffocated the Danes early, striking twice in just over a minute during the first period with goals from Dominik Kubalík and Daniel Voženílek.

Denmark settled things down in the second frame, but veteran captain Roman Červenka put the game out of reach later on. Denmark spoiled the shutout late when Mikkel Aagaard scored on a power play at 57:30, but Matěj Blümel sealed the 4-1 victory with an empty-netter in the final minutes.
